The Complete Guide to Cleaning and Caring for Your Blinds

Well-maintained blinds can last for many years, looking as good as the day they were installed. Different blind types require different care approaches – here's everything you need to know.

General Maintenance Tips Regular light cleaning prevents dust buildup and makes deep cleaning easier. A weekly dust with a soft cloth or vacuum with a brush attachment keeps most blinds in good condition.

Roller Blinds Dust regularly with a soft, dry cloth. For marks, use a damp cloth with mild detergent, then wipe dry. Never immerse in water. For stubborn stains on wipeable fabrics, a gentle spot clean should suffice.

Venetian Blinds Close the slats and dust from top to bottom. Flip and repeat. For deeper cleaning, wipe each slat with a damp cloth. Special venetian cleaning tools that grip multiple slats save time. Aluminium blinds can be cleaned more vigorously than wooden ones.

Wooden Blinds Never use water on real wood blinds – it can cause warping. Dust regularly with a soft cloth or wood-specific duster. For stubborn marks, use a slightly damp cloth and dry immediately. Apply wood polish occasionally for extra protection.

Roman Blinds Vacuum on low suction with an upholstery attachment. Spot clean marks with a damp cloth. Some roman blinds can be dry cleaned – check manufacturer instructions. Never machine wash.

Vertical Blinds Dust regularly with a soft brush or vacuum. Most vertical blind louvres can be removed and wiped with a damp cloth. Allow to dry completely before rehanging.

When to Call a Professional For heavily soiled blinds, especially delicate fabrics or complex mechanisms, professional cleaning may be worthwhile. Some dry cleaners offer blind cleaning services.

Extending Your Blinds' Life Avoid touching blinds with dirty or greasy hands. Raise blinds fully before opening windows to prevent damage. Ensure mechanisms operate smoothly – stiff controls can cause wear.
